(The phone on the property of the MissFoundation in memory of Douglas.)
The Original Telephone of the Wind created by Itaru Sasaki.
The Phone of the Wind was created in Japan by its creator, Itaru Sasaki, while grieving his cousin who died of cancer. He purchased an old-fashioned phone booth and set it up in his garden. He installed an obsolete rotary phone not connected to wires or any “earthly system.” Here Itaru felt a continued connection to his cousin and found comfort and healing amid his grief.
This healing tool has taken off and is as one can see from the link there are phones all over the world now, some in private homes, and others in public spaces. It has been noted that for many being able to have this kind of communication opens up the possibility for healing, as many have shared that they feel a two way conversation transpiring.
Our family was able to have a Wind Phone installed on the new acerage that the MissFoundation, near Sedona, Arizona, recently acquired in memory of our son, Douglas. No one adored talking on the phone quite like Douglas. He was and continues to BE a heart with ears of that I am certain. Upon returning from our camping adventures, where we were off the grid, he’d have the phone glued to his ear as soon as the back door was unlocked, and the cordless land line grabbed. This was before cell phones, and even if we would have had them, no service, would have been ours. I absolutely adored being away from all of civilization, as that was how it felt in those seasons of endless adventures with our children and dogs. Nothing made me happier, then, and now I find myself resting within these precious memories often.
When this opportunity came our way we hoped we could make it happen. Such a terrific and satisfying feeling to receive the pictures of it recently that I am sharing. These are tangible, viable ways, we are trying to show up to serve in whatever ways that we can. Recently I was describing this process to a pal I was having a conversation with. Sharing how useful it is to think outside the box, and allow our loved ones no longer earth side to have their input. Douglas was extremely involved with this endeavor and I followed his bread crumb trail through inquiry.
There are infinite ways in which to pay it forward. I wholeheartedly believe our loved ones have a hand in this, as I had never heard of these phones, yet somehow landed on the site, and I could feel Douglas’ immediate excitement. We had to brainstorm a moment, because having one here on the island did not feel like a fit, and then the MissFoundation came tumbling in. http://missfoundation.org
It has been seamless, flowed, and as I glanced back in my emails to my first inquiry about it last September, and here we are, it’s complete, and ready for use. This feels just right, and I can sense Douglas’ delight. He promises to not make it a party line, and listen in, yet I’m certain he’ll do some flybys as my dear friend, Judy, calls them to catch whatever he can. Another place to visit to feel and witness the endless connection between earth and the cosmos. Our hearts, thoughts, feelings and words are forever being carried by the wind.
